National Young Artist Competition
The
National Young Artist Competition, first held in 1962 with
25 contestants, has grown in size and stature through the
years. Originally it was an annual event, but since 1993 it
has been held every other year, alternating between Odessa
and Midland and staffed by the Symphony Guild of the host
city. Currently it is limited to 80 contestants, who must
be less than 28 years old and must be certified by their teachers
as competent to perform as soloists with a professional symphony.
There are three categories: piano, winds and percussion, and
strings. The two-day Competition is judged by a panel of musicians
of national repute. The winner in each category is awarded
a $2,000 cash prize and a medal honoring Dr. Lara Hoggard,
founder of the Competition; the judges also select an overall
winner, who receives an additional $1,500 and is engaged to
perform as a soloist with the Symphony during the following
season. Through the years approximately 3,000 contestants
have participated, and many have gone on to distinguished
careers in music. In recent years the Competition has received
generous support from the Beal Foundation. Have a specific question not covered here? To send an e-mail to the NYAC coordinator, click here
