In 1977 the Thouvenel Quartet was hired, providing the orchestra with principal violinists, violist, and cellist and making possible a series of chamber concerts by the string quartet itself. The quartet had been formed two years earlier by graduate students at the University of Indiana. It matured in the Permian Basin, gaining international recognition and touring the Western Hemisphere and Europe. The Symphony has had a resident string quartet ever since.
