The string quartet, hired in 1977, was so successful that in 1981 the Lone Star Brass Quintet was formed by Symphony principals and has been in existence ever since. In addition to giving concerts in the Permian Basin, the quintet has toured the U.S. and Mexico and has issued several recordings. Michael Santorelli, Co-principal Trumpet of the Midland-Odessa Symphony, has been a member of the quintet since its formation.

MEET THE LONE STAR BRASS
Michael Santorelli, trumpet
After studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Michael Santorelli graduated from Murray State University with a B.M. in Music Education. He completed his Master’s degree at the University of Louisville and has performed as Principal Trumpet with the Chamber Orchestra of the Northwest, Autonoma University Orchestra and Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra. In addition to playing Co-Principal Trumpet with the MOSC for 23 years, he is the Director of Bands at Trinity School and serves as a member of the adjunct faculty at Midland College. He and his wife Shari, MOSC’s Principal Keyboardist, have three children and live in Midland.
Eric Baker, trumpet
After growing up in Fort Worth, Eric Baker received his B.M. in Music Education from UT at Arlington, where he was also a three year member of the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps. He earned his Master’s degree in Trumpet Performance from Arizona State University. Baker began his tenure as Co-Principal Trumpet with the MOSC in 2006 and is in his third season with the Lone Star Brass and the Moonlight Serenade Big Band. A talented marching band clinician and teacher, he was invited in 2007 to be a featured soloist at the Western International Band Clinic in Seattle. He and his wife, Emily, live in Odessa, where she teaches music at Hays Elementary.
Scott Millichamp, horn
Detroit native Scott Millichamp is currently enjoying his first season as Coprincipal Horn with the Midland-Odessa Symphony; Scott was previously Fourth Horn of the Arkansas Symphony, and has also performed with
the Honolulu Symphony, the Missouri Symphony, and the Lyrique en Mer opera festival on France’s Belle Ile en Mer. Scott studied horn at Interlochen Arts Academy and Indiana University, and was subsequently
a Graduate Assistant in composition at the University of Hawai’i. Scott recently performed his own horn and piano piece Crossroads as a Contributing Artist at the 2009 International Horn Symposium. He can

Joseph W. Frye, trombone
A native of White House, Tennessee, Joseph W. Frye received a B.M. in Music Education from the University of Tennessee and a M.M. in Trombone Performance from Florida State University. In April 2008, he graduated with
a D.M.A. with an emphasis in Trombone Performance from Florida State University. In addition to his duties with the MOSC, Dr. Frye plays trombone and euphonium with the 572nd Air National Guard Band of the Smoky
Mountains, where he holds the rank of Staff Sergeant and is the current trombone soloist. He has performed with the Tallahassee, Albany, Knoxville and Oak Ridge symphony orchestras. Joseph also enjoys arranging, cooking and spending time with his wife, Christa, and their cat, Socrates.
Kevin Young, tuba
Originally from Baton Rouge, LA, Kevin Young was playing both trombone and tuba by age 11. After starting college at LSU, he enlisted in the US Army, serving his country in the 1st Calvary Division Band in Texas, 8th
Army Band in Korea, 389th Army Band in Maryland and The United States Continental Army Band. Kevin completed both his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees at LSU. He played principal tuba with the Rapides Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Dominion Brass Band, and Salt River Brass. Kevin lives in Midland with his wife, Lee Ann.
