A woodwind quintet, the West Texas Winds, was formed by Symphony principals in the 1980’s but was disbanded in 1995 for financial reasons. The ensemble was brought to life again in 2000 and has gained an enthusiastic audience. The Winds gained national recognition in 2002 when they advanced to the semi-finals of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.

Ashleigh Leas, flute
Ashleigh Leas is currently the principal flute of the Midland-Odessa Symphony & Chorale as well as a member of the West Texas Winds. An avid performer and teacher, she is the professor of flute at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX and also plays regularly as a substitute flute/piccolo wit the Orlando Philharmonic, Orlando Opera, San Antonio Symphony and San Antonio Opera. Ashleigh earned her Bachelor’s in Music Performance from Duquesne University in Pittsburg, PA and her Master’s in Music Performance from Rice University in Houston, TX. Her teachers include Tal Perkes, Damian Bursill-Hall and Leone Buyse.
Caryn Crutchfield, oboe
Now in her fourteenth season with the MOSC and her fifth season with the West Texas Winds, Caryn Crutchfield holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in Oboe performance from West Texas A&M University where she studied with Robert Krause. Caryn has also performed with many symphonies throughout West Texas including Big Spring, Abilene and Amarillo. Caryn teaches many double reed students from the Permian Basin area and teaches Band at St. Ann’s School. She is married to Kevin, an MOSC violinist, and has two sons, Morgan and Preston.
Chris Chance, clarinet
Chris Chance received a Bachelor of Music degree, a Performer Diploma and the Performer’s Certificate award from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, IN. He has performed coast-to-coast in the U.S., as well as in Canada, Mexico and Japan. He spent several years as a recording studio musician in the Indianapolis area as a member of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic. He is currently co-principal clarinet of the Missouri Symphony Orchestra, principal clarinet of the MOSC and a member of the West Texas Winds. Chris also teaches clarinet in the Permian Basin area.
Luis F. de la Garza, III, bassoon
Originally from Laredo, Texas, Luis F. de la Garza, III began his professional career in 2000 as a Marine Musician after graduating from the Armed Forces School of Music. He was then stationed with the First Marine Division Band located in Camp Pendleton, CA. Luis earned a Master’s Degree in Musical Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music. He has played with the Amarillo Symphony and the Akron Symphony. Luis is currently Principal Bassoon of the Mansfield (OH) Symphony, plays 2nd in Ashland (OH) Symphony, and is Co-Principal of the Missouri Symphony Orchestra. This is his second year with the MOSC and the West Texas Winds.
Matthew Haislip, horn
Matthew Haislip is the Co-Principal Horn of the Midland-Odessa Symphony Orchestra and the horn player with the West Texas Winds. He has performed with the Cincinnati Opera, the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, the Queen City Brass Quintet, the North East Texas Symphony Orchestra, and the Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony Orchestra. Matthew received his B.S. in Music Education from Texas A&M University-Commerce and his M.M. in Horn Performance from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music. He is on the faculty of the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Michigan.
