CHORALE AUDITIONS

Overview

West Texas Symphony Chorale Auditions for the 2022–2023 Season will take place in person by appointment and consists of four portions:

1.) Sign Up
2.) Vocalise
3.) Performance of an aria, art song, hymn or Messiah’s Hallelujah Chorus (optional)
4.) Sight Reading

Details for completing these components of the audition are below.

What Ages May Audition For The Chorale?

Membership in the Chorale is open to all singers in high school and older. Students in high school must have either a letter of recommendation from their head music director presented at the time of the audition or have one director as a member of the Chorale for his/her student to participate.

When And Where Will Auditions Take Place?

Auditions will be held at the West Texas Symphony headquarters located at 3100 LaForce Blvd, Midland, TX 79706 (near the airport). An appointment to audition can be made by clicking the “SIGN UP” button below.

Audition dates are as follows:

TUESDAY, AUGUST 23 | 4-8 PM
TUESDAY, AUGUST 30 | 4-8 PM
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 | 4-8 PM

Each audition will last about 10 minutes.

Steps For Preparation To Audition

Step 1: Complete the "SIGN UP" form above to schedule your audition.

Step 2: Vocalise (Required)

You will be asked to sing in your high and low ranges with the following vocalise provided below. When it gets too low or too high, then just drop out.

Step 3: Audition on the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah or Aria/Art Song/Hymn (Optional)

You may choose to sing any of the following vocal selections to enhance your audition, though, it is not required: Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus or an Aria, Art Song or Hymn. A piano accompanist will be available to play for your audition for your convenience with no charge. Please bring two copies of music—one for the pianist and the other for Mr. Hernandez.  

Step 4: Sight Read (Required)

You will be given one of several possible sight reading exercises to sing after you have completed steps 1, 2 and 3 of your audition. You will be given the starting pitch and 30 seconds of practice time. (Few singers get through the entire exercise during the practice time, so please don’t worry if this happens to you.) Following the 30 second practice, you will then work your way through the exercise. Please know that we are not looking for perfection; we are looking for reasonable proficiency.  Breathe — we will work with you to make the process as painless as possible. Examples of Sight Reading exercises are below. You may use any method to sight read (i.e. solfege, numbers, neutral syllables like “lah” or “loo”, etc)

When Will Placements Be Announced?
